SandStone Stories #1: If heaven had a stairway

This stairway in Kaufman Figaro Sandstone draws the eye in. It is such a rare sight to see a non-beige tiled staircase, that when you see one in Sandstone, it is memorable.

This home located in the south, prioritizes its outdoor area. Given the beautiful weather, who would not spend as much time as humanly possible in the open area? That means, greater priority was placed on the pool, garden and patio areas.

The large pool, situated directly at the back of the home is surrounded in specially treated natural sandstone slabs as big as a small car. Each slab was maximized in size and installed in the biggest possible dimension, so that the dramatic vein pattern could be appreciated when viewing the pool area from the second floor window of the house. The stone continues down the staircase, down to the lower base of the home, to form an accent wall in the font.

This home is pushing 20 years old and still looks contemporary today. I believe materials make a house. You cannot, however, create timeless design without the correct material choice. When making your selection, just ask yourself: Is this material a trend, or will it still look good in 20 years’ time?

Stone Stories: Mondrian in Stone

This house expertly marries sandstone, slate and white surfaces to form a sculptural composition reminiscent of the work of Bauhaus artist, Piet Mondrian. He is well known for his use of primary colors and empty cubes. Interlocking to form a beautiful painting, it was very advanced, given the art work is almost a hundred years old. The soul of the painting is felt in this house, but the primary colored paint is swapped with textural stone, glass and white geometry.

Kaufman Teakwood sandstone is counter-balanced with a dark tone slate in a rough finish, producing a natural harmony of wood veins and dark brown bark. The feel that the material combination produces is one of warmth. It takes away the hard edge of modernism which can be cold and unwelcoming at times.
The wood and bark color tones remind one of the country side, welcoming the home owner with its warm embrace. This was in stark contrast to the location of the house, which is just a few steps away from the hustle and bustle of major city center and highway.

This house used the Kaufman material almost 20 years ago. We are so happy our stone has been part of this family home for close to two decades. Everytime I see the house I am filled with joy.

Stone Stories: Tactile

When specifying material for an exterior application, often, the vision is to create a rustic effect to capture the feeling of being in nature. Nothing does the task better than sandstone.

This Kaufman material also takes it one step further. Not only does the material have all the richness of Figaro sandstone, this client requested a customized chiselled finish, reminiscent of the previous cladding we did for Shangrila Heat Cafe. The client had seen that hand chiselled material but wanted it in a wood vein pattern. This was not a problem. Actually, we are able to produce the chiselled finish on any of our materials. Most often, people pick gray, black, beige or wood vein.

So don’t just design. Be an experienced creator and dare to feel. This is a big part of that experience. Johann von Goethe, German writer and statesman, expressed it so succinctly, “Architecture is frozen music”. Design should not end at skin deep visuals. Produce a multi-sensory narrative that unfolds, relieving memorable and soul enriching moments to treasure. Don’t just aim to be an architect. Be a story teller…. a composer… Your language is not just words, but stone, wood and glass.
